AAPSNOTTERSKOP - SOME HISTORY
Between 1996 and 2000 a South African based in the Czech Republic, developed a small circle of internet friends from around the world who
shared a mutual interest - BMW GS motorcycles. Mark Pautz acted as the primary e-mail conduit until May 11, 2000 when Lodewyk Steyn (a
South African based in the USA) created a personal web site (www.abjaterskop.com) and a mailing list
dedicated to the online GS-friends. Since then the group of friends have used the name of the web site - Abjaterskop - to refer to themselves.
So what the hell is "Abjaterskop"? Some of Lodewyk "Iron-Butt" Steyn's most memorable rides in the early-90's were in the
Legendary Marico District of the picturesque North West Province of South Africa. The Marico Bushveld has been immortalized by South African author,
Herman Charles Bosman, who set many of his stories in and around Marico. Abjaterskop is a butte in the Marico and a spot that has fond memories for
Lodewyk (and we'd all like to know exactly what happened there ;-).
Over the years membership of the Abjaterskop MC has spread around the world:
What connects this diverse array of people? Abjaterskop was started as a way of communicating the group's passion for BMW GS motorcycles, a passion
they all share in some way or another. The group communicates via an e-mail forum and discusses anything from Formula One results to paternity leave
as well as all aspects of keeping the rubber side down!! Sometimes it is just open heckling (recent targets being after-market screens, lager seat
for larger bums, the merits of Barum tyres and obsessive bike cleaning), but it is all in good spirit! All current Abjaterskop members have a connection
with South Africa and all own, have owned or want to own a GS. All are welcome to join in, but Harley riders are likely to take a lot of stick!
Members have met whenever they have had the opportunity, often to ride and drink and sometimes to motorcycle tour and drink, but mostly just to
drink! Before the weekend of August 29, 2003 the largest number of members together in one place at the same time was four - that was in South Africa
in January 2001 for Mark's fortieth birthday.
